#256 – Blogging

Today is the official FIVE year anniversary of tick-tock hobbies. Time has flown since I started this in 2015, and I thought it was high-time to do a reflection on this journey so far!

When I started this craft blog, all I wanted was a place to document my DIY projects and some of the inspiration behind the attempts. I knew heading into it that there were already thousands of better craft blogs out there, but I wasn’t interested in building a following, so I figured I would just go for it anyways.

As a way to honour the past five years, I wanted to do a quick countdown of top three things that have resulted from this humble venture!

3. The projects. Some of my favourites include the following: Basic Socks | Cabled Toque | Chunky Mittens | Colour Block Mesh Bag | Doctor Bear | Heart Charm | Flower Shawl | SELENE Crop Top | Simple Doll | Striped Brioche Shawl. I love some of these for the way they turned out, others for the homes they found, and still others for the skills I learned while making them.

2. The accountability. I never would have tried half as many projects or learned nearly as many skills if I wasn’t trying to hold myself accountable to the promise to post every Tuesday. And yes, I fell behind (many times), but learning to get back on track was also a lesson in itself! I don’t know if I could name another habit that I’ve been so disciplined with for so long.

1. The community. It’s been lovely meeting other makers, and some of my favourite experiences have been meeting indie dyers at yarn fairs or getting to pattern test for others! The Internet can be a big place, but caring people can make it seem smaller.

At the end of the day, I’m not entirely sure what was the tipping point for starting this blog, but I’m thankful that I made the choice! It wasn’t hard to start at all. Anyone can make a free blog with WordPress or Wix or Medium or any number of sites, and who knows where it could take you! What would/do you blog about?

Until next time, happy crafting!
