#169 – Basic Socks

Okay so you might have to bear with my excitement, but I genuinely think this is my favourite thing that I have ever made. I kept spamming my friends with progress pictures, and now that I’m done, I can’t wait to wear these socks all the time.

  • 3/4 skein of Round Mountain Fibers — a super fine weight (1) yarn (colour: Atlantic Puffin)
  • Size 2 (2.75mm) knitting needles (I used ChiaoGoo 23cm circulars)

One of the reasons why this is a fantastic first sock pattern is because there is a full step-by-step YouTube tutorial! This makes it really easy for complete sock beginners like me to follow along and figure out each step. I love it. I ended up using 12 rows in the rib, 55 rows in the leg, and 50 rows in the foot before doing the decreases. I was able to try the sock on as I knit to make sure that I would be getting a good fit.

The other part of the reason why I love these socks so much is because of the self-striping yarn. I have never really used self-striping before (minus this exact skein of yarn in my Sleep Mask) but the yarn shines in this pattern. Just look at those stripes! I was literally over the moon as the colours began to settle into the stripes. Even the gusset looks amazing!

Based on the uncaked skein, I had no idea that the yarn would work up so beautifully, but I am in love with it. I’m sort of tempted to go to the nearest local yarn store and pick up a million skeins of self-striping in order to match my newly found love of sock knitting, but I know that would be bad for my budget.

I think that socks are going to be my favourite thing to knit because they are both practical and fun to knit. The different parts (cuff, legs, heel flap, gusset, foot, toes) are so interesting and keep you engaged while you do the project. They also work up fairly quickly once you get in the rhythm. If you would like some socks, please hit me up so I have an excuse to try more patterns, buy more yarn, and make more socks.

Until next time, happy crafting!
