#196 – Candy Cane

I know that it’s nowhere near the Christmas season, but I’ve been overdue on my promise to one of my babysitting kids for a while and this is what she asked for! It’s so rewarding seeing little faces light up from the littlest gestures.

  • 1/100 skein of Paintbox Yarns Simply DK – a DK (3) weight yarn (colour A: Marine Blue)
  • 1/100 skein of Paintbox Yarns Simply DK – a DK (3) weight yarn (colour B: Dusty Rose)
  • 1g Loops and Threads Classic FiberFill
  • 2.00mm hook

Pattern by tick-tock hobbies

(abbreviations: SC = single crochet; DC = double crochet)

  1. Start with colour A and use the magic circle technique to SC six stitches. (6 stitches)
  2. SC in each stitch of the round. (6 stitches)
  3. Switch to colour B, and repeat step 2 twice. (6 stitches)
  4. Alternate between colour A and colour B and repeat step 3 four more times so that there are three sections in colour A and three sections in colour B. (6 stitches)
  5. Using colour A, do three SC, then three DC. (6 stitches)
  6. Repeat step 5 once. (6 stitches)
  7. Using colour B, carry out steps 5 and 6. (6 stitches)
  8. Switch to colour A and carry out step 3.
  9. Switch to colour B and carry out step 3, then cut the yarn and close off the round.

This is a mini project that works up super quickly, so I actually think it would be totally feasible to make a little garland of candy canes around Christmas time. You could even customize it to suit whatever colour scheme you like to decorate in! I paired the candy cane with a heart to finish off the gift.

I actually got the yarn for this out of the Paintbox Advent Calendar kit from a few years ago! I can’t find any existing links for it anymore, but it was 24 different colours of Paintbox Yarns Simply DK in 10g balls. This kit would be awesome for playing around with colour combinations and making cute candy canes or other other mini projects.

Until next time, happy crafting!
