#292 – Hiking

(As a disclaimer, I signed up for two big test knit/crochet projects over the month of August, so I’ll be posting a lot of non-craft related things as I tackle them.)
I’ve been lucky enough to have friends who have pushed me to enjoy more of the natural beauty of Canada, which has resulted in more time spent hiking over the last few years. Since I live (relatively) close to the Rocky Mountains, it’s a great way to spend a weekend!

My last two hikes were Ha Ling Peak and Yates Mountain in the Canmore/Kananaskis area, and while it was a bit smokey at times, I still had a great time with my friends. There’s always time for good conversation as you make your way through the trail, and every hike has its own unique beauty. Sometimes I think that I have a preference for more wooded trails, but then I’ll end up on a rocky scramble and find myself loving that too.

I’ve never been able to enjoy running, but I find hiking to be a very different type of cardio exercise. Running makes me want to give up when I’m only five minutes in, but I’m willing to go on three+ hour hikes without a batting an eye. I think that it’s because hiking feels like more of a slow burn, while running hurts me right away? I have no proof for that though. If there are any kinesiologist or exercise specialists out there, I would love to hear a more scientific explanation.

While I started this post off talking about the beauty of Canada, I wouldn’t be telling the whole story if I didn’t also tell you that I’ve been able to find gorgeous hikes on all my travels, including Iceland and Hong Kong! It just goes to show that when you find a great hobby, you can typically enjoy it anywhere in the world. Do you have a hobby that you love to do on your vacations too?

Until next time, happy crafting!
