#291 – Swimming

(As a disclaimer, I signed up for two big test knit/crochet projects over the month of August, so I’ll be posting a lot of non-craft related things as I tackle them.)
After an eleven year hiatus, I finally dove back into the world of summer swimming, and it’s been an absolute blast. With the world still figuring out what is reasonable for COVID-19 precautions, it was nice to be able to hop in the pool and focus on the exercise.

While I never won any prizes or set any records as a swimmer, I have a ton of fond memories spending summers at the pool. From laughing with friends during dryland and practice, to hotel hangouts at weekend swim meets, the people were what made me initially fall in love with the sport.

Beyond the people, I would probably characterize my memories of swimming with the word ‘discipline’. I remember not wanting to wake up for morning practice, but going anyways because my mom and brother were waiting for me. There were also the little technique things like trying to keep my chin down on my dives that required mental discipline. For me, swimming always provided very clear proof of what happens when you put the effort in. The concrete result of discipline and not skimping on practice sets is getting your best times. When you take shortcuts, it’s harder to improve.

I also feel like there’s something in my family about loving water. From my grandfather taking my mom swimming in the ocean in the mornings, to my mom teaching me how to swim in the kiddy pool, there’s something about that continuity that brings me joy. I hope it’s something that can be passed on.

Until next time, happy crafting!
