#278 – Crescent Socks

Spring has been a tease the last few weeks, with some golden sunshine days, and rain/snow mixtures the next. Because of that, my outdoor adventure goals have been put on hold, but I’ve been able to tackle some projects that have been on my waitlist!

  • 3/5 skein of Diamond Select Footsie – a fingering weight (1) yarn (colour B: 2508 Taupe)
  • Size 2 (2.75mm) knitting needles (I used ChiaoGoo 23cm circulars)

I personally like ankle socks best, so I tweaked the pattern a little to adjust for the sizing changes. I did seven rows of ribbing in the cuff, and completed rows 1-4 before starting my heel flap. In total, I only had five repeats of the crocus motif, and I didn’t use any rounds of plain stockinette before starting my toe decreases. Even though I use the 23cm circulars, I find that I can still try on my sock as I go, and that’s always been my most reliable method of sizing something.

My other modification was a complete accident – I was watching Netflix while I knit, and I misread the directions for the heel flap. Instead of repeating the slip-knit pattern for the heel flap, I slipped the first stitch and knit across the rest of the row, and I did this for the entire heel flap. In the long run, this might mean that my heel is less durable, but I hope that they will still hold up long enough for me to enjoy these socks for a while.

If this yarn looks familiar to you, it’s because I actually recycled it from my Barcode Socks project. I found that I wasn’t really wearing them, and I’ve been trying to shift to prioritizing functional, purposeful items in my maker life. There’s an Albertan company, Populess, and their motto is ‘Fewer Better Things’. It really resonated with me, and while I’m not completely sure how this will fit in my love of crafting and making, I will be sure to keep you posted.

Until next time, happy crafting!
