#277 – Baby Zig-Zag Sweater

I’m continuing my dive into knit sweaters by starting off with a toddler-sized sweater for my cousin’s newborn son! I’m pretty sure that he would count as my cousin once removed, but I’ve always found those terms confusing. Why can’t we just call each other cousins?

  • 9/10 skein of Lion Brand Heartland – a worsted weight (4) yarn (colour A: Sequoia)
  • 1/5 skein of Lion Brand Heartland – a worsted weight (4) yarn (colour B: Joshua Tree)
  • Size 8 (5.00mm) knitting needles (I used Knitter’s Pride 102cm circulars)

This was my first ever yoke sweater! The mini sweater I had done before was a raglan, so this was another new experience for me. I don’t know why I used to think that yoke sweaters, especially colourwork yokes, were too hard to try because this really flew off the needles for me. The brown and green create such a warm, earthy feel, and I think they paired beautifully for this pattern.

While my stitch count lined up with the pattern for the neckline, I found that I had eight stitches too many per round for the body. I think it was because the pattern provided a stitch count (which I met), and then asked for one additional increase round for the contrast colour. If I had skipped the last increase round, then I would have been bang-on the stitch count. Because I am hoping that this sweater will still fit by the time winter comes back, I figured it would be okay to have a slightly larger round, but I didn’t think about how it would make the sleeves wider as well.

I made the 12-month size and checked in on the Craft Yarn Council for the measurements, and it seemed to match up, but there’s no way to know until my cousin gets to try it on. If I get pictures, I will try to share them on my #ticktocktogether page which has been ignored for way too long! There are also a few other people in my life who have had babies recently, so I’m thinking more baby sweaters may be in my future.

Until next time, happy crafting!
