#263 – Baby Deer Hat

So as I teased in my last post, there is indeed a companion piece to the newborn pants I showed last week. It’s a little hat, complete with ears and antlers. Friends, it came out so stinking cute. I am truly thankful for all the amazing designers out there!

  • 2/5 skein of Caron Simply Soft – a worsted (4) weight yarn (colour A: Soft Pink)
  • 1/10 skein of Loops and Threads Snuggly Wuggly – a DK (3) weight yarn (colour B: White)
  • Size 7 (4.50mm) knitting needles (I used Knitter’s Pride 60cm circulars)

I chose to use the hat pattern from Ashlee, but the antlers and ears are from Cassie’s pattern. There isn’t any reason for this, I just liked the look of these two patterns best from what I saw on Ravelry, and thought I would do some mixing and matching. Both designers are so talented though, I’m sure you could get an equally beautiful finished product sticking to just one of the patterns.

At the time, I didn’t have any access to fibrefill, so I actually stuffed my antlers with yarn ends and scraps! The antlers still stand fairly straight as is, but if you wanted something sturdier, you could try adding a straw into the middle of the antler. The straw could give the antlers the structure that yarn ends and fibrefill aren’t able to.

The antlers also make me wonder about the possibilities of knit “amigurumi”! I’ve seen knit stuffies before, and always felt too intimidated to give it a try, but now I’m curious about how it might work. If you have a beginner friendly pattern, please share it with me – I’d love to give it a try.

Anyways, I ended up making the 3-6 month size hat. just to give baby a bit of wiggle room in terns of fit. I also did my best to match the dimensions that the Craft Yarn Council gives for sizes, but it’s just so hard to know. There’s so much variation between babies, and depending on when this photoshoot actually happens, baby could have grown. I suppose the most failsafe method is to get actual measurements, but seeing as baby hasn’t actually entered the world yet, that isn’t an option.

Still, all this anxiety about sizing will be worth it when I get to see the final pictures! I know I haven’t really been using the #ticktocktogether hashtag lately, but I do love seeing my finished objects being used and loved as intended.

Until next time, happy crafting!
