#262 – Baby Deer Pants

Over the Christmas break, I was asked if I could make a set of newborn clothes for a photo shoot! This was an easy ‘yes’ for me – I love love love babies, and I have a firm belief that anything baby-sized is automatically ten times cuter.

  • 1/3 skein of Caron Simply Soft – a worsted (4) weight yarn (colour A: Soft Pink)
  • 1/50 skein of Loops and Threads Snuggly Wuggly – a DK (3) weight yarn (colour B: White)
  • Size 8 (5.00mm) knitting needles (I used Knitter’s Pride 60cm circulars)

So the first change I made to Megan’s pattern was actually unintentional – I didn’t start off using her pattern. I actually started (and finished) making Heather’s Snapdragon Soaker before I found out that it wasn’t what the mother-to-be had in mind. However, I decided that I wanted to keep the waistband of the soaker because it was just so dang cute, and I had already gone to the trouble of learning how to make an i-cord. In addition to that, I am always a bit worried about sizing, and I figured having a tie could help solve that problem.

The second addition to the pattern was obviously the little deer tail that I added! This was a inspired by the ear-shapes in the Tiny Reindeer Hat by Little Red Window, but modified to be bigger and seamed flat rather than curved like the ears were. I actually used the same stitch pattern for both the pink and white layers. It’s only the lighter gauge of the white yarn accounting for the difference in size. There are six rows with 12 stitches, four rows with 10 stitches, and then decreasing every other row until there are only 4 stitches left.

I’m still not 100% sure that these pants came out in the right size, but I am keeping my fingers crossed. I tried to make them on the bigger side, because you can always pin large clothes, but you might not be able to get small clothes on at all. I can’t wait to see what the little one will look like in these adorable pants!

There is still a second part of this newborn outfit that is yet to come to this blog. While it might be hard to believe, I swear seeing the two components together makes the whole thing even more adorable. If you get baby fever over these posts, it’s unavoidable.

This project has planted a little seed in my mind – wouldn’t it be fun to partner with a photographer to create baby photoshoot accessories? In my head, I’m thinking of fluffy white blankets and other themed outfits. If you know of any photographers who are looking for some props, please let me know! I would love to have the chance to make more outfits like this one.

Until next time, happy crafting!
