Inspiration #4 – Travel Yarn

I know that I’ve been back from Japan and Hong Kong for ages, but I’m still not really over it, so you’re going to continue to see some delayed travel spam and trip-related or trip-inspired projects.

  • A local yarn store (Keito in Tokyo, Japan)

This particular little yarn store was actually within walking distance of our hostel in Tokyo, and I promise you, that was a happy surprise and not intentional at all on my point. Truly. It was so nice to see familiar brands on the wall (e.g., Madeline Tosh, Brooklyn Tweed), but also to see new-to-me brands, like Noro. The whole shop gave me that tantalizing feeling of familiar and yet unknown.

I also find it neat how some things transcend language barriers. When the shop keeper asked me in Japanese if I would like my new skein of yarn caked, she did a little swirling motion with the tip of her extended index finger that made the whole message instantly clear. Some gestures are just universal, I guess!

I ended up with two skeins of yarn from Keito, one of which is this absolutely lovely hand-dyed yarn by MOCOemiko. I’ve been having so much fun playing with it, and I honestly can’t wait to show you what I have designed with it! Let’s just say it’s a lot more summer than the current weather indicates.

I love getting local yarn from the places I visit because I know that the pieces that they end up in will always serve to remind me of the happy memories of my trip! For example, even though my mom has claimed my Triangle Lace Shawl for her own, every time I see her wear it, I think of warm LA beaches and sunny days at Disneyland. This new skein of yarn is destined to carry its own travel memories!

Until next time, happy crafting!
