I don’t know how much you know about how to make yarn, but it typically involves spinning (or twisting) strands of fibre together. As an aside, I’ve always wanted to learn more about spinning, but that’s a project for another day. This week, I was shocked to learn about a new type of yarn that doesn’t involve any spinning. It’s called ‘blown yarn’ and it involves blowing fibre into a narrow mesh tube.

#336 – Chinese Workbooks
For those of you who don’t know, I actually attended a Mandarin-English bilingual school from Kindergarten to Grade Nine. Unfortunately, I have since forgotten much of what I once knew, so lately I’ve been looking into resources for more Chinese practice. I was actually shown these workbooks last year, but haven’t had a chance to dive into them properly until now.
I’m pretty far from what you would call tech-savvy, but when my brother offered to build me a custom mini keyboard, I was very intrigued. This is one of his new hobbies, and it was neat to be able to see his process. I had no idea how simple / complex keyboards were, so I have a new level of appreciation for them.
Continue readingReview #7 – Yarn Advent Calendars
My close friends have heard me dither about whether or not to get a yarn advent calendar for the last six years, and they’re probably absolutely sick of listening to me. Luckily for them, I finally committed to buying one for myself, so they never have to hear me argue the pros and cons again! I am so excited to start opening the packages tomorrow, but thought I would just give a quick overview of what it is and how it works.
Continue reading#259 – Felted Yarn Join
I first heard of this technique on Stephanie’s blog, and I was instantly intrigued. A way to reduce the amount of yarn ends? Sign me up! It took me a little while to track down a needle felting tool, but I finally had the chance to try it out on my latest project.
I decided a while ago that if I was going to take knitting seriously, I was going to need a set of interchangeable needles. Depending on the brand and needle material, these sets can add up quickly. Luckily, I found a used set of needles for sale online at a discounted price and immediately snapped them up.
As a crocheter/knitter I know this is an alien concept. Why on earth would you want to unravel something? The truth is however, that we won’t always love projects as much as we once did, or maybe things don’t fit like they used to. In my case, a store-bought machine-knit sweater had developed a hole, and I decided I wanted to repurpose the yarn for a future project!
Continue reading#203 – DPN vs. Magic Loop
My previous sock knitting experiences have all used a 23cm (9 inch) circular needles, but I knew there would come a day when I would have to branch out and try other techniques. Now that I have completed one sock with double-pointed needles (DPNs) and one sock with magic loop, I feel like I can finally make a fair comparison.
Continue readingInspiration #5 – “Ethical” Wool
So while I’ve briefly looked into spinning before, I haven’t ever given a lot of thought to where wool yarn comes from. The simple answer seems to be sheep, but beyond that, your guess was as good as mine.
So because I am Canadian, I just feel like I should point out that 9″ circulars are the same thing as 23cm circulars. However, almost all patterns will refer to the cord length in inches, so I thought I should follow convention.
