#159 – Granny Squares

I’ve always thought that granny squares are so versatile. I’ve seen the different patterns for granny squares combined into scarves, blankets, and even cardigans! I decided that for this new year, it was time to bring things back to basics.

I was actually taught to add a chain-one stitch between each group of three DCs on the side sections, and chain-two between the pair of three DCs on the corner turns. I find that this gives the granny square more room to “breathe”.

There are a lot of different granny square patterns floating around out there, but this is one of the most classic styles. I think that the one big thing that has held me back in the past from making a granny square blanket is the amount of seaming that I would have to do. I’m sure there are a lot of techniques around it, so I’m going to put it as one of my goals for 2019! We’ll see how it goes.

In the last two years, there’s also been the promotion of International Granny Square Day! In 2018, it was on August 15, and makers were encouraged to upload pictures of granny squares to Instagram so that when you clicked the hashtag, it would look like a beautiful quilt. I thought that was such a cute idea! If it happens again this year, I will definitely be participating.

There are also amazingly inspirational people out there, like Nadia, who committed to making a granny square a day for an entire year! You can view her work here, and it even comes with tutorials, if you want to follow in her footsteps. Isn’t that such a neat idea, just in time for a new year?

Until next time, happy crafting!
