#146 – Mickey Mouse Baby Hat

I really like babies. When I found out that my cousin in Hong Kong had just had a baby boy, I was so excited. There are so many cute patterns for baby clothes and toys, and I had so much fun sifting through everything.

  • 1/10 skein of Estelle Yarns Alpaca Merino — a worsted (4) weight yarn (Colour A: Black)
  • 1/10 skein of Red Heart Soft – a medium weight (4) yarn (above: Really Red)
  • 1/100 skeins of Patons Canadiana — a worsted (4) weight yarn (Colour C: Winter White)
  • Size H (5.00 mm) hook

I sized down my hook, as I found that the 5.5 mm hook was leaving gaps with the worsted yarn. As I wanted this hat to be warm, I figured that a smaller hook would eliminate the holes between stitches. In hindsight, I wish that I had followed up with further changes, such as increasing the number of rows or stitches in a round, since the final product came out feeling very small for a 6 – 12 month newborn.

I also ended up leaving off the yellow trim, as I thought it took away from the iconic colours of Mickey Mouse. I know he does have yellow in his shoes, but I guess I just think of his black body and his red shorts first. I also flipflopped for ages about whether or not to add the pom-pom ears. They’re undoubtedly cute, but are they too much for the already cute design?

At any rate, I am still super unsure about the size of the finished product. My cousin’s son will be about six months when I see him, so I’m hoping that the 6 – 12 month side will provide enough leeway for me to get away with this small hat.

Until next time, happy crafting!

EDIT (10/15/2018) — The hat is too small 🙁 I am so sad, but I guess these things happen. I am frantically trying to think of how I could alter it, but without the original yarn handy and no Michael’s store in the vicinity, I don’t think I’ll be able to find a solution in time.
