#363 – Cabled Mittens

Over the years, I’ve made a lot of promises to a lot of different people to knit or crochet different things for them. Unfortunately, I don’t always remember to follow through with it, so I am thankful for how gracious others have been in terms of patience and gentle reminders. This is one of those cases, where my friend has been waiting very politely for a pair of mittens.

  • 61g / 71m of Rain City Knits Superwash DK – a DK weight (3) yarn (above: Heliotrope)
  • Size 3 (3.25mm) knitting needles (I used Knitter’s Pride 60cm circulars)

The sad truth of this project is that even though the pattern is lovely and the yarn is gorgeous, I am a dummy and did not actually choose the correct weight yarn for these mittens. I also did not swatch. These two facts doomed this pair of mittens even before I began, so even though I worked up the entirety of one mitten (minus the thumb), this is a project likely doomed for frogging. It’s just a little bit too snug, and as much as I love how it looks so far, I think it will be more functional if I start over.

What do you think? Is this mitten salvageable, or am I better off starting over? I do really adore the vibrant purple of this yarn though, so it’s kind of a bummer that I will have to pick a different yarn if I continue with this pattern down the road. I feel guilty that my friend has been waiting for so long, but hopefully she feels like it will be worth it when she gets the perfect mittens made with the correct yarn weight.

Until next time, happy crafting!
