#302 – Knot Headband

At my workplace, instead of doing a communal birthday gift fund and all getting the same default gift, we’re all responsible for celebrating one person and making their birthday special! My person had their birthday this past weekend, and I thought a quick headband would round out a gift package perfectly.

  • 1/2 skein of Estelle Yarns Alpaca Merino Worsted – a worsted weight (4) yarn (colour: Blue Jeans)
  • Size 7 (4.50mm) knitting needles (I used Knitter’s Pride 60cm circulars)

My coworker is obviously not a baby, so I had to make some small changes to this headband pattern in order to fit an adult head. I cast on 21 stitches instead of 15, and knit in stockinette stitch for 9″ before heading into the woven knot portion. I also had to adapt the cabling pattern to work with the new stitch count, so for Row 3, I did K3 C3F C3F C3F, and Row 7 was C3B C3B C3B K3. Other than that, I followed the pattern as written.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to block this headband, but I think that would have helped to keep the sides of the headband from curling in. It’s not a particularly big deal, and I think it’ll look fine once it’s worn, but that nit-picky part of me just likes everything to be perfect.

I actually had to make this headband twice, as the first time I tried, I used a scrap ball of yarn that ended up being too small. In my mind, headbands don’t take up that much yardage, but maybe I need to revise that thought? I hope that my coworker likes this birthday gift, and that it keeps her ears warm this coming winter!

Until next time, happy crafting!
