#246 – Succulent Cupcake Icing

One of my good friends recently had her bridal shower last weekend (and wedding this week!), and I had the opportunity to help with some of the food for the shower. My friend Ayla made all of the cupcakes, but we ended up decorating them together. Our goal was succulent plants!

There is no real pattern or tutorial because we improvised almost all of it! Ayla made vegan chocolate cupcakes that were rich and moist, as well as the icing that we coloured green. We used matcha powder for the more subtle shades, but had to turn to food colouring for the darker greens.

To my knowledge, the “rose” looking cupcakes were made using tip 1M, the little “tree” looking cupcakes were made using tip 4B, and the flatter mini swirls were made with tip 2D. There were also the circular loops using the 2D tip.

My favourite were the ones I made based off my extensive Food Network watching! I used tip 2A to make each of the petals, starting from the outside rim and working inward to the decoration in the middle.

I think that they all came out really well considering that neither Ayla nor I are particularly experienced as cupcake decorators. This was actually my first time working with real piping bags and tips! Growing up, we always just cut the corner off of Ziploc bags, so this was a huge step up. If you plan to bake regularly, I would 100% recommend getting a set of basic tips – it makes decorating so much easier and gives your cupcakes a more polished look!

Until next time, happy crafting!
