#244 – Two-Colour Brioche

No, this post is not about bread. This is about a knitting technique called brioche! I put off trying this for a long time, simply because it looks so complex, but I finally decided that there is no time like the present and decided to dive into it.

  • 1 Appropriate weight yarn (colour A)
  • 1 Appropriate weight yarn (colour B)
  • The appropriate gauge needles (either DPN or circular)

To simplify this technique to the bare bones, it basically requires that every row be worked twice. That’s what’s happening when you “slide” the stitches over! I had no idea that such a complex looking technique with reversible sides could be so simple in execution.

Look how fluffy the stitches look! Isn’t it amazing? The fact that the reverse side is equally beautiful still feels like magic to me, but the best kind of magic. I also think it’s cute how the “brk” (brioche knit) and “brp” (brioche purl) stitches have been given the names “bark” and “burp” respectively by the knitting community. It just goes to show how creative the community is!

I’m using Scheepjes Metropolis for the accent colour and a SweetGeorgia Bulletproof Sock yarn for the base colour, and I can’t wait to show you the finished product of my first brioche knit! It’s a pattern by Andrea Mowry from Drea Renee Knits, and it is absolutely dreamy.

Until next time, happy knitting!
