#228 – Cat Adoption

I didn’t grow up around pets, so I’ve never really known if I was a cat or dog person. On a bit of a whim, I started looking into animal adoption, and after thinking about it briefly, I decided that I wanted to adopt a cat!

After browsing the list of adoptable animals, my heart immediately went out to Annie. She was described as an older, less energetic cat, who just wanted a quiet life with someone that she could snuggle with from time to time. I thought this was perfect since I don’t think I have the experience or knowledge to deal with more energetic kittens or cats, and my home is super peaceful! Also, just look at her face!

The actual adoption process went really smoothly! I think the whole thing took me about the span of a week once I actually got moving. First, I had to get approval from the condo board, and then I had to fill out an application for Annie. Because of COVID-19, all the meetings were done over the Internet, but I still got to see Annie’s foster family and also speak with one of the organizers behind Zoe’s to make sure I would be able to provide a good home.

I’ve been asking all my friends for advice too, and so far it seems like Annie has been settling in well! My biggest fears were about the litter box and scratching, and so far, it looks like Annie is a good litter box user and a minimal scratcher! Fingers crossed that this remains true in the coming weeks.

I think that adopting Annie was one of the best choices I could have made! Part of me was getting lonely and feeling down with all the social distancing, and it’s made a world of difference knowing that there’s something else living in this apartment! She’s not super affectionate yet, but she does let me scratch behind her ears and under her chin, and she’s getting bolder about sitting and sleeping on me. I’m hopeful that we’ll continue to get along more and more!

If you’re also looking to add some animals to your home, I would definitely recommend checking out local animal rescues or shelters! Don’t overlook the older animals either – a lot of them still have a lot of energy and love to give. In the meantime, do you have any cat tips for me? I could definitely use the information.

Until next time, happy crafting!
