#225 – Stretchy Bind-Off

The very first time I tried to cast-off a toe-up sock, it wouldn’t fit over my toes. I was shattered. I had worked so hard on these socks, and now it seemed like it was all for nothing. When I turned to Google, I found this option for a super stretchy bind-off, which was exactly what I needed to save my project.

  • Appropriate weight yarn
  • The appropriate gauge crochet hook
  • The appropriate gauge needles (either DPN or circular)

This bind-off saved my life! The first time I used it was with the YinYang Kitty socks, which honestly put me through so much learning. In hindsight, maybe I wasn’t ready for that pattern when I started it, but thanks to the power of the Internet, I have grown as a knitter!

I like this bind-off, not only because of the stretch component (hallelujah), but also because of the way it accents the ribbing! The photo tutorial may look intimidating, but once you get into the rhythm of it, you can fly through the bind-off. Sometimes I get confused about which way to yarn over, but the photos in the tutorial are really great references.

When you get to the end of the sock, you deserve a bind-off that can get the job done on the first try. After all, everyone wants a sock that they can actually wear! I would highly recommend this technique for any sock knitters out there, but are there any other must-know sock knitting secrets? Please send them my way, I’d love to learn.

Until next time, happy crafting!
