#182 – Fox Hat

Last summer, I wanted to make a baby hat for my cousin, but it ended up being too small. I was so disappointed, but I promised myself I would try again. This was my second attempt, and I actually ended up making it a bit too big, but my hope is that he can grow into it.

  • 3/4 skein of Lion Brand Lion’s Pride Woolspun – a bulky (5) weight yarn (colour A: Pumpkin)
  • 1/5 skein of Cascade Yarns Pacific Chunky – a super bulky (6) weight yarn (colour B: White)
  • Size I (5.50 mm) hook

The only change I made was to leave off the eyes and nose, but that was more of a time constraint choice than anything else. I actually finished this hat as I was driving my dad to the airport, so there was literally no time for me to consider crocheting and sewing eyes and a nose. I think it would have elevated the hat, and perhaps made it a bit more clear what animal this is.

As you can see, it’s a bit big for my cousin-once-removed, but it’s still better than my previous attempt that was too small. At least this way, he can grow into it! Babies grow so quickly, and it’s so hard to guess sizes when you’ve only seen them once in real life. I would say third time is the charm but I think you also have to know when to cut your losses and try something else. For example, amigurumi has no sizes to worry about!

Despite what I think is clearly a fox-shaped ear, my dad actually ended up telling my cousin and his family that this was a dog, but that’s okay too. Dogs are also cute. Have you ever had one of your creations mislabelled by someone else?

Until next time, happy crafting!
