#181 – Stretching Cat

My friend Marina has two cats, so when I had the chance to make a birthday gift for her, I knew I wanted to make something cat related! This little amigurumi reminds me of the mobile game ‘Neko Atsume’ that had a brief flash of popularity, but I’m hoping its cuteness will endure.

  • 1/20 skein Premier Yarns Cotton Fair — a fine weight (2) yarn (colour A: Cream)
  • 1/100 skein Premier Yarns Cotton Fair — a fine weight (2) (colour B: Slate Grey)

  • 2 safety eyes (8.00 mm)
  • 3.00 mm hook

I didn’t have any wire to add to the tail, but other than that, I followed the pattern as written. I like how dynamic this pose is! A lot of the time, amigurumi can look a little static, at least in pictures, so it was a breath of fresh air to see this stretching, playful cat. I can definitely imagine this cat pouncing on a toy or even just shaking out the sleep from her limbs after a long nap.

I also loved the details of this pattern, from the grey “socks” to the little “X” to signify a certain area in the back. I’ve always wondered why cats often look like they have “socks” on, and it turns out it’s a genetic thing! Apparently other animals like pigs and horses can also have this genetic mutation, but personally, I think cats do it the best.

My only regret is that I didn’t have a picture of my friend’s cat, so that I couldn’t customize the amigurumi to match. All I knew was that her cats are named Darwin and Lucy, and sadly, they look nothing like this little amigurumi creation. My friend still said that she thought this stretching cat was cute though, so I’ll take it as a win!

Until next time, happy crafting!
