Inspiration #3 – Embroidery

One of my favourite Instagram accounts to follow is Florals and Floss. She’s a local maker in Edmonton, and her eye for beauty and attention to detail is amazing. When I found out she was selling kits, I knew it was only a matter of time before I bought one

Basically craft kits and workshops are my ultimate weakness. There’s just something so darling about having all the supplies neatly packaged into one box. Alexandra makes sure that there is everything you need, from a needle, hoop, fabric, tons of embroidery floss, and detailed instructions.

I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I’m nowhere near finished for this project. One of the hardest things for me in embroidery was to let go of my need for perfection. I wanted each stitch to be just right, and as a result, I ended up starting and restarting more than once. Sometimes, it’s about the big picture, rather than the itsy bitsy details that no one (other than the maker) will ever really see.

At any rate, it was really cool to explore this new area of crafting and making. I have a huge crush on some other Instagram embroidery accounts, the biggest of which is probably on times.new.romance. I love how she creates a 3-D effect, especially with the braided hairstyles. It’s very different than Floral and Floss’ style, but beautiful in a different way. It’s more minimalistic, and the blank spaces say almost as much as the stitches do.

I’m so curious to discover what my own embroidery style is, if it exists at all, but I’m sure it will take many more hours of work before I reach that point. I am so happy to have gotten my feet wet in this area, and can’t wait to keep going.

Until next time, happy crafting!
