#141 – Tie-Dye

Some things just go together, like the idea of tie-dye and summer camp. While I actually made this t-shirt ages ago, I’ haven’t had the chance to write it up until now. I thought it was quite fitting for these ending days of summer.

The kit is really handy, as it removes the need for a soda-ash wash beforehand to prep the clothing. All you need to do is add water, so it makes it a great option for crafting in a group. Everyone just needs to bring their own item to dye! For the record, natural fibers (cotton, hemp, silk) are best at absorbing the dye, whereas fabrics like polyester or rayon really don’t, so that’s just something to keep in mind.

I ended up doing this tie-dye with my friends from church, and it was so interesting to see how everyone put their own spin on it! Some people dyed t-shirts, others did tank tops, and everyone had unique colours. Personally, I went for a spiral rainbow design.

Compared to crochet, tie-dye is a lot more free-form, which I find harder. I like following directions and rules, and in tie-dye, anything goes. Still, I’m happy with the way that it turned out, and more than that, I enjoyed the memories made as I did this with my friends.

Until next time, happy crafting!
