#140 – House Hippo

When I was growing up, I used to watch a lot of television with my brothers. One commercial that really stuck with me was the North American House Hippo advertisement. If you’ve never seen it before, I highly recommend taking a look! At any rate, it’s what inspired this week’s project.

  • 1/10 skein of Knitley Road Lavish – a DK weight (3) yarn (above: Nickel City)
  • 5g Loops and Threads Classic FiberFill
  • 2 safety eyes (7.5 mm)
  • Size G (4.0 mm) hook

Apart from sizing up my hook, I didn’t make any changes to this pattern. The directions were straightforward and easy to follow, and there are helpful pictures as well.

I find that the oversized head makes this hippopotamus adorable! It does make it a bit more complicated in attaching the legs, since this hippo doesn’t actually stand with his legs, but with his head, but it all works out.

The boy I babysit currently loves reading this series called “Who Would Win”, and it pits two animals against each other. The most recent one that he’s been enjoying is Rhino vs. Hippo, and it’s full of cool animal facts. For instance, did you know that baby hippos weigh between 60 and 100 pounds? The more you know.

Until next time, happy crafting!
