#138 – Mini Dolphin

A while back, I promised one of the little girls I babysit that I would make her an amigurumi for any animal that she wanted, and she picked a dolphin. After browsing Ravelry, I found a pattern and the rest is history.

  • 1/100 skein of Premier Yarns Cotton Fair — a fine weight (2) yarn (above: Slate Grey)
  • 5g Loops and Threads Classic FiberFill
  • 2 safety eyes (7.5 mm)
  • 3.00 mm hook

I ended up using a lighter weight yarn and smaller hook than those listed on the pattern, just because that was what I had on hand. This made it a smaller and cuter size, and if it was to be in a hanging mobile, I think this smaller size would be preferable. Still, since I was only planning to make one dolphin, I don’t think it would’ve mattered much what size I would have used.

To be honest, I wasn’t a huge fan of how this dolphin turned out. Maybe I did a bad job of counting stitches so that the shaping didn’t work out properly, but I just thought the whole thing looked less like a dolphin and more like a little grey nub. In the future, I would consider retooling this pattern and making the dolphin arch more, like a dolphin jumping out of the water.

At any rate, the little girl was thrilled with the end result, and that’s all that matters in the end. Seeing the joy in other people is one of my favourite parts of making!

Until next time, happy crafting!
