#402 – Wrap Dress

Although my blog posts might lead you to believe that all I do these days is weave, my craft life has continued to include knitting projects, and I am thrilled to be able to post about this particular one. It’s a wrap dress that fits like a dream and is so cozy at the same time, and I can’t wait to wear it to all the holiday gatherings this year.

  • 345g / 1035m of DROPS Air– an aran weight (4) yarn (above: Forest Green)
  • Size 7 (4.50mm) knitting needles (I used Knitter’s Pride 100cm circulars)
  • Size 8 (5.00mm) knitting needles (I used Knitter’s Pride 100cm circulars)
  • 4x 12mm buttons

I really liked the yarn choice recommended by Phoebe for this test knit, as I felt like it made a significant difference to the weight of the finished product. The only other time I made a dress with yarn, I felt like the end product was heavy, and even though the design was adorable, I didn’t love wearing it. This time, I love how the finished product feels lightweight, yet warm, all due to the blown yarn!

Phoebe designed this pattern to be easily adjusted, particularly where people wanted to taper for the waist and where to place the buttons. I kept flip flopping about where to place the buttons, as I didn’t know if I wanted them to go above the waist tie. In Phoebe’s version, she actually starts the buttons on the slanted diagonal above the tie, but I decided that I wanted my buttons aligned vertically. I also used smaller buttons than the recommended size, so I tweaked my yarn-overs a bit to make the button hole smaller. I briefly considered leaving the buttons off all together, but I’m really happy I kept them because their little sparkle is the perfect finishing touch.

Honestly, if I hadn’t signed up to do this as a test knit, I might have turned it into a sweater because the upper half is so cute! I feel like a wrap sweater is still pretty trendy in 2023, so maybe I’ll have to revisit this pattern with the leftover yarn. I definitely overestimated how much I would need for this dress, so I still have two full balls. Do you have any suggestions for what I should make with them?

Until next time, happy crafting!
