#295 – Mattress Stitch

While my preference is for sweaters worked in the round, this sweater was worked in two panels (front and back) and the sleeves were worked flat as well. This means that the pieces had to be seamed together in order to make a wearable garment. I’ve always struggled with seaming, and if I’m being honest, it’s almost ruined a few of my finished objects. I was determined not to let that happen this time.

For this project, the panels weren’t worked in straight stockinette, so that added a bit of a wrinkle to the process. At any rate, I tried my best, and I think it turned out okay. The seam doesn’t exactly blend into the panels, but because its worked consistently, it almost looks intentional, or at least that’s what I tell myself.

Two sweater panels seamed using the mattress stitch.

I wish that I would have left my yarn tails longer so that I could have used them to sew the seam, but I’m not that prepared, so I had to just use leftover yarn for the seam. It appears to be strong and durable, with no gaping, but I’ll keep an eye on how it holds up after a few wears. If there are better stitches available, please let me know so that I can keep learning and improving.

Until next time, happy crafting!
