#286 – Speed Socks

Fun fact: Weichien named these socks “koffie” after a fellow test knitter joked that this pattern whipped up so quickly, just like the dalgona coffee trend. In my head, I think of them as speed socks since they work up quickly, and the little chevrons remind me of arrows on a race track turn.

  • 2/3 skein of Mineville Wool Project Merino Nylon 2Ply Sock – a fingering weight (1) yarn (colour A: 1034)
  • 1/10 skein of Yarn Ink Classic Sock – a fingering weight (1) yarn (colour B: Fringe)
  • Size 1 (2.25mm) knitting needles (I used ChiaoGoo 60cm circulars)

This pattern is worked with the fingering-weight yarn held double, so it makes these socks very cozy. However, because of the stranded colourwork AND the double held yarn, it means that there are four strands dangling from the needles at all time, so it does take a bit of organizing to prevent knots and other mishaps. If you are using the magic loop technique, I suggest being careful how you turn the needles at each half so that the yarn doesn’t end up twisting like crazy. If you don’t want to work with fingering-weight held double, you could try and substitute with a worsted weight yarn, but I would definitely check gauge before jumping in.

In my previous test knit for Weichien, I mentioned her unique sizing system, and I will remind readers of it again here. Be sure to measure carefully before casting on for a size, or else your socks will not be the right fit. Again, if you are between sizes, the colourwork may make your tension tighter, so I think sizing up is the smart choice.

Until next time, happy crafting!
