#212 – Baby Button Flap Boots

In Korean culture, babies typically have a celebration at 100 days! This is slightly different from Chinese culture, where the celebration is held after the first month (满月). My best friend asked me if I could help her make some gifts for a coworker who was celebrating his son’s 100th day, and this is one of the gifts that she picked out!

  • 1/4 skein of Lion Brand Jeans – a worsted (4) weight yarn (colour A: Stonewash)
  • 1/10 skein of Bernat Softee Baby – a DK (3) weight yarn (colour B: Flannel)
  • Two (2) 19 mm wooden buttons
  • 3.00 mm hook

I actually ended up changing the way I was spacing the stitches on the sole so that I wouldn’t have to cut the yarn and join at a different spot later on for the top of the boot. I did 2 HDC before the 10 SC, and saved 3 HDC for the other side of the oval. The rest of the increases were done following the way the pattern is written, just with different distribution.

The other change I made was forgetting to do a camel stitch so that the ribbing on the sole of the boot isn’t quite as defined as it could be. Sadly, I didn’t notice until it was too late.

I also skipped/chained three stitches instead of two to create the slit for the button hole, but it allowed the 19 mm to fit perfectly. I love the warmth that the wood buttons added! I bought them from Michael’s after a fruitless search at Dollarama, and they’re the perfect finishing touch.

Sizing for people who are not the same size as me makes me despair, so I have been a bit paranoid throughout this gift making process. There’s so much variation in the online sources about how big different baby shoe sizes are, and I am not convinced that I’ve gotten it right in the end. I have no idea how big this mystery baby’s feet are, but I really hope it fits him!

Until next time, happy crafting!
