#198 – Bathroom Painting

When I started renting this apartment from my brother, I immediately began thinking about all the little renovation projects I could do. I used to watch HGTV avidly (maybe too much so), but I’ve never had the opportunity to really make a space my own before. When my brother offered me the chance to help redesign the bathroom, I was so excited!

As far as I can tell, the steps for painting a room are as follows:

  1. Tape all the edges of the walls / ceilings / baseboards.
  2. Prime the walls if they are a dark colour.
  3. Paint!

I struggled a LOT with Step 1, skipped Step 2 altogether, and had decent success with Step 3. The struggles of being short meant that I had to get creative and balance precariously on things in order to reach the high portions of the room. At one point, I was standing on a step-stool that was balanced on a chair. I am proud to report that I only fell off once, but that single fall did include landing in the paint tray.

In spite of the challenges, or perhaps because of them, I am still so happy with how the bathroom turned out! Yes, there are parts of the walls where there are not quite enough coats of paint, and yes, my tapework was shoddy at best. There’s just something about the sensation of finishing something that makes all the troubles and imperfections fade away.

I actually got to pick out the floor tile and the bathtub/shower tile as well! I secretly wanted hexagon tiles at first, but they weren’t exactly in my brother’s renovation budget, so I chose these marble tiles instead. I know that the white tiles for the shower are a bit boring, but I thought the oversized square was more original than the standard subway tile. I wanted to help install them myself, but I didn’t have the time over the summer. In hindsight, it was probably best to let a professional do it rather than an HGTV-taught beginner.

So what do you think? Does my paint colour / floor tile / shower tile arrangement allow for a future as an interior designer or should I just start hiring professionals? Have you ever had the chance to design a space?

Until next time, happy crafting!
