I can’t believe another year has passed, but here we are at another Canada Day! It might not be Canada’s 150th this year, but there are always a lot of fun celebrations going down. This year, I wanted to keep it simple with this little applique.
I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the story of Sadako and the thousand paper cranes, but I heard it as a child, and it really made an impression on me. For one, it stuck out to me as a plea for peace in an imperfect world, but for another, it spoke to me about hope.

These two German words may be opposites, but I feel like I inhabit both of them equally. When I’m home, I’m dreaming of far off locales, but when I’m travelling, a part of me longs for home. In order to tackle this fernweh/heimweh cycle, I decided that I wanted to ground myself and mark where home was. I was cleaning out my car when I found some old maps, and I decided this would be a perfect project!
In recent years, my church has had a Christmas Carnival, and this year, I was helping with the craft table! This mini toque was a super easy craft shown to me by my friend, and it was a hit with all the visiting children!

Let’s be honest — no nation is perfect. Canada, which had its national beginnings steeped in colonialism, struggles even now with racial and gender equality. Still, I believe that Canada is a nation with potential, and I am thankful to have been born and raised in a country that strives to embrace multiculturalism and freedom.
