#308 – Homemade Play-Doh

Despite working so closely with little ones for so long, this is actually my first time making homemade Play-Doh! It was surprisingly easy as well, so I can see myself doing this for my clients much more in the future.

Alternative: Homemade Playdough by Kim at The Best Ideas for Kids

I cannot explain properly how much I LOVE this recipe. I’ve used homemade Play-Doh that turns out too sticky or that dries out too quickly, but my coworker’s recipe is honestly perfect for playing with, and it keeps pretty well in an airtight container too. The only drawbacks are that it is a cooked recipe AND it uses a good amount of cream of tartar, which I know not everyone has on hand. Still, I would say that this recipe is 100% worth it. I mean, this recipe is so easy to customize with different scents, food colouring, or even glitter, so if you got a bulk bag of cream of tartar, you could make Play-Doh customized for special holidays or events! The alternative recipe that I have linked isn’t an exact match in terms of proportions, but it’s pretty close, and I think it would turn out pretty well.

Homemade Maple Play-Doh

I went with a maple scented Play-Doh this time, and I honestly had a bit of regret because for the rest of the day, I was craving Maple Dip doughnuts from Tim Horton’s. I also wish that I would have picked a scent that matched with a prettier colour, like a green Peppermint scented Play-Doh or something to match with the holidays, but I guess there is always the next batch! With COVID-19 precautions, we’re not allowed to reuse Play-Doh across different clients, so my families have been able to take home some Play-Doh with them after the session. I think that’s kind of nice, and I hope that we can actually continue doing that, even when restrictions ease up. Do you have any suggestions for colours or scents that I should try?

Until next time, happy crafting!
