One of my favourite things about the crochet community is connecting with other people through social media! Ever since I saw Holly (@storyland_amis) and her 100 amigurumi countdown, I knew that she was an exceptional crochet designer. When she posted on Instagram asking for pattern testers for her cuddle-sized Zippy the Sloth, I jumped at the opportunity.
- 1/2 skein of Paintbox Yarns Simply DK – a light weight (3) yarn (above colour A: Light Caramel)
- 1/50 skein of Paintbox Yarns Simply DK – a light weight (3) yarn (above colour B: Vanilla Cream)
- 1/50 skein of Lion Brand Heartland – a worsted weight (4) yarn (above colour C: Black Canyon)
- Size F (3.75 mm) hook
Since I was pattern testing, I didn’t actually change anything on this pattern apart from using a slightly lighter weight of yarn, which was a decision purely based on the yarn I had available in my stash. I also suggested to Holly about the possibility of using the magic circle technique, which is my go-to technique for amigurumi, but these are all teensy-tiny suggestions.
Holly wrote up such an easy-to-follow pattern and even included pictures to help show how to best sew the pieces together! I found that so valuable, especially for the claws and limbs. After all, is it really a sloth if it doesn’t have the clinging arms and legs? I also loved how Holly provided several options for the eyes. I don’t know about you, but giant safety eyes are a bit of a rarity in my neck of the woods. With Holly’s suggestions, even without the safety eyes or shank eyes, Zippy still comes out looking adorable.
As an aside, pattern testing is such an interesting concept! It shows such dedication to making sure that the readers are getting an error-free, easy to read pattern, and I think that’s something I need to work on. I’m still not sure if things that seem crystal clear to me make sense to the rest of the world, so if you have any feedback, please let me know!
Anyways, to kind of sum everything up, I highly recommend checking out Holly’s work, because it is absolutely fantastic! From mini Star Wars figures to her jumbo, luxury sloth, Holly is constantly pushing her boundaries and trying new designs, so I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!
Until next time, happy crafting!
