Despite having started in crochet before diving into knitting, I had never heard of the crochet cast-on technique. It turns out that this cast-on more closely mimics the cast-off edge than a backwards loop cast-on or knitted cast-on. Given that this is a blanket, I really wanted both sides to look as similar as possible, so this seemed like a great technique to try out.

#386 – Fringe Twisting
If you made it through my previous post with all of its weaving terminology, I salute you. This is going to be a lot less dense, I promise. As part of the final steps of finishing the rug, we had to secure the warp ends after they were cut from the loom. We ended up tying them into a super cute twisted fringe!
I have been dying to do a workshop at Fern’s School of Craft since they opened in 2017, and I was finally able to snag a spot in their rug weaving workshop. It was everything I was hoping it would be, and it made my heart so full. I want to apologize ahead of time for all of the weaving terminology and attempts at explanation in this post, but I’m just really ecstatic about this whole form of crafting.
Continue reading#384 – Mystery Loot Bags
This project was the brainchild of my babysitting child, who is now 10 years old and infinitely more creative and artistic than I was at that age. I think she must have been inspired by loot boxes in online games, or maybe the gacha capsule machines in Japan. At any rate, our goal was to create mystery bags filled with her ‘paper stuffies’ so that we could draw for them later in the afternoon.
Continue reading#383 – Mini Peach Pie
It has been such a long time since I’ve made a pie, but when my friend asked me to do a baking date together, I jumped at the opportunity. She wanted to make a full size pie for her coworker, but there were enough leftover scraps for me to make a mini peach pie!
My mom told me that this was one of the least cute, ugly, unlovable things I had ever made, and she was dead serious when she said it. On one hand, her feedback made me laugh, and on the other, hand I was instantly crushed. I figured that I would write it up anyways, as not all projects can be winners.
Before adopting Annie, I didn’t really have any experience with pets. Since that time, I’ve started to feel more comfortable around four-legged friends, including both cats AND dogs. My friends have been kind enough to include me on some of their daily dog walks, and it turns out I really dig it.
Continue reading#380 – Wide Ribbed Toque
This is yet another throwback post, but it reminds me of when I was younger and seemed to have infinitely more time to creative. It was made as part of a crafting blitz for donations, but I remember really loving the texture on the hat, and the ribbing on the brim. The one downside was that the hat seemed a little wide, so it was best suited for a larger headed person.
For my best friend’s bachelorette (part two, duh), we did a weekend trip to Napa Valley. I loved the whole getaway, but one of the highlights for me was the aerial silks class that we took together! I had never done anything like this before, so it was a really fun experience pushing my body to move in a new and different way.
They say that there’s nothing new under the sun, so while the instant camera was originally released in 1948, they seemed to have made a big comeback in the early 2010’s. I bought a Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 in 2014, and since then, I’ve enjoyed having a physical memento of special moments. There are newer models and more ‘authentic’ film cameras, but I’m most definitely not a photographer, so this one is good enough to make me happy.
