So a few months ago, I posted about a Kirby I had made for my friend, and I mentioned that I wanted to do more with it. Between school and the holidays, it took me a lot longer than I had expected, but here is the final addition – a little Yoshi “hat”, just as if Kirby had absorbed Yoshi in a game of Super Smash Bros.!

• 1/6 skein of Patons Grace — a sport (3) weight yarn (colour A: Ginger)
• 1/20 skein of Patons Grace — a sport (3) weight yarn (colour B: Fiesta)
• 1/100 skein of Red Heart Soft — a worsted (4) weight yarn (colour C: White)
• 2 safety eyes (8.00 mm)
• 3.00 mm hook

Pattern by tick-tock hobbies

(abbreviations: SC = single crochet; INC = two single crochet into a single stitch; DEC = one single crochet over two stitches)

SHELL

1. Using the magic circle technique, start with six SC. (6 stitches)
2. INC in each stitch around the circle. (12 stitches)
3. *SC in one stitch and INC in the next.* Repeat from * to * five more times. (18 stitches)
4. *Do two SC, then INC in the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * five more times. (24 stitches)
5. *Do three SC, then INC in the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * five more times. (30 stitches)
6. *Do four SC, then INC in the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * five more times. (36 stitches)
7. *Do five SC, then INC in the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * five more times. (42 stitches)
8. SC in each stitch around the circle. (42 stitches)
9. Chain-six while skipping six stitches. This will form one arm hole. Do fifteen SC. Chain-six while skipping six stitches to form the other arm hole. Do fifteen SC. (42 stitches)
10. Chain-one and turn. You are now going to work in rows rather than in the circle. Starting in the second stitch from the hook, do a DEC. Do eleven SC. DEC across the last two stitches. (13 stitches)
11. Chain-one and turn. Starting in the second stitch from the hook, do a DEC. Do nine SC. DEC across the last two stitches (11 stitches)

NOSE

1. Chain-eleven. Beginning in the second stitch from the hook, SC in each stitch across the row. When you reach the end, turn the chain over so that you are now working in the bottom of the original chains, and SC across the row. (20 stitches)
2. Working in the round, *SC in one stitch. INC in the next*. Repeat from * to * nine more times. (30 stitches)
3. INC in each of the next two stitches. Do eleven SC. INC in each of the next four stitches. Do eleven SC. INC in each of the next two stitches. (38 stitches)
4. SC in each stitch around the circle. (38 stitches)
5. °Do five SC. DEC across the next two stitches.° *Do four SC. DEC across the next two stitches.* Repeat from * to * once. Repeat from ° to ° once. Repeat from * to * two more times. (32 stitches)
6. *Do six SC. DEC across the next two stitches.* Repeat from * to * three more times. (28 stitches)
7. *Do five SC. DEC across the next two stitches.* Repeat from * to * three more times. (24 stitches)
8. SC in each stitch around the circle. Cut the yarn and leave a tail. When stitching the nose to the head, hold the edges of the nose together. (24 stitches)

EYES

1. Using colour A and the magic circle technique, start with six SC. (6 stitches)
2. INC in each stitch around the circle. (12 stitches)
3. *Do three SC. INC in the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * two more times. (15 stitches)
4. SC in each stitch around the circle. Cut the yarn and leave a tail. (15 stitches)
5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 for the other eye, but do not cut the yarn this time.
6. Holding the two eyes together, SC in each stitch around both circles. (30 stitches)
7. SC in each stitch around the circle. (30 stitches)
8. Repeat step 7 two more times. Cut the yarn and leave a tail.
9. Using colour C, chain-four. Starting in the second stitch from the hook, SC in each stitch to the end of the row. (3 stitches)
10. Chain-one and turn. SC in each stitch to the end of the row. Turn so that you are now working in the bottom of the original chain, and do three more SC. Cut the yarn and leave a tail. (6 stitches)
11. Repeat steps 9 and 10 for the other eye.

SPIKES

1. Chain-two. In the second stitch from the hook, do three SC. (3 stitches)
2. Chain-one and turn. INC in each stitch across the row. (6 stitches)
3. Chain-one and turn. *SC in one stitch. INC in the next.* Repeat from * to * two more times. Cut the yarn leaving a long tail. Fold the triangle shape in half to form a cone, and stitch shut. Attach the cone to the “shell”. (9 stitches)
4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 two more times.

I had so much fun working this out! It took a lot of playing around to get the shapes proportioned like I wanted, but it was worth the effort! Even colour matching was quite the adventure. For example, did you ever notice that Yoshi’s spikes are slightly more orange than the red shell/harness that he wears on his back? I wanted to make sure that I imitated that as closely as possible.

The “hat” is totally removeable, and allows for switches with any others that I might design in the future! It would be so fun to have these as a little line-up of Kirbys!
