#95 – Harry Potter Polar Bear

One of the things I love most about the online crochet community is the atmosphere of collaboration and support. I have so much respect for the creativity of other makers, and I love it whenever I can be a part of that! When Holly, from Storyland Amis, asked me if I would be willing to pattern test for her again, I was overjoyed.

  • 9/10 skein of Red Heart Soft – a medium weight (4) yarn (colour A: White)
  • 1/50 skein of Caron Simply Soft – a worsted weight (4) yarn (colour B: Sunshine; colour C: Autumn Red; colour D: Black)
  • 2 safety eyes (preferably 15mm, but I only had 8mm available)
  • 10g Loops and Threads Classic FiberFill
  • Size F (3.75mm) hook

Since this was a pattern testing, I tried not to change anything. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the 15mm safety eyes, and I didn’t have time to order some, so I decided to try to make it work with the 8mm eyes I had at home. When it was all said and done, I realized that the eyes were too far apart, so I decided to get creative. I thought that adding “glasses” would help, and the first character that I thought of that wears glasses is Harry Potter! To that end, I quickly found some Gryffindor colours to use for the scarf (alternating ten rows Autumn Red and five rows Sunshine), and stitched on glasses and the classic lightning bolt scar for the polar bear.

I love the way that this project came out, but I also wish I had put the eyes closer together. This is something that happens to me a lot, as I often misjudge how big the nose will be. I have learned that in general, eyes that are closer together are cuter, so I will try to do that in the future! I think that having the correct size eyes would also have made a huge difference.

When I was working through this pattern, I kept thinking that the head looked like a baby beluga, or even a super puffy cloud! It wasn’t until the features were stitched on and the body was attached that it started to look more “bear-like”, so that’s a good reminder to persevere on and trust the pattern!

Holly is an amazing amigurumist, and I previously had the good fortune of pattern-testing her Cuddle Sized Sloth! Just like that experience, I found that this polar bear was well-designed and the final product was so cute. In particular, I love the way that Holly designs limbs for her amigurumi, as it is different than the typical cylinder and sphere shapes that most people use. Holly is also the one who told me about the #toysforsyrianrefugeechildren campaign, and I am so excited that I get to participate in that as well! It has been a joy and an honour to see makers all around the world working together on this project, and it makes the world, which can be pretty scary at times, seem safer and more loving.

Until next time, happy crafting!
