#89 – #toysforsyrianrefugeechildren

I’m not sure if anyone has actually ever picked up on this, but my Inspiration posts typically run on the third Tuesday of each month. I screwed up this month, but I think the thoughtfulness of this week more than makes up for this late post! This was inspired by the project that Justine at Chubby Knots is working on, as she is trying to send 500 toys to Syrian refugee children living in Lebanon this Christmas.

  • 1/5 skein of Paintbox Yarns Simply DK – a light weight (3) yarn (body colour: Vanilla Cream)
  • 1/8 skein of Paintbox Yarns Simply DK – a light weight (3) yarn (sweater colour A: Pistachio Green; sweater colour B: Seafoam Blue)
  • 5g Loops and Threads Classic Fiber Fill
  • 3.00mm hook

The Bear’s sweater is where the makers are allowed to be creative, so I did four rows in green, six rows in blue, and then four rows in green! Other than that, I followed the pattern exactly, as Justine is trying to make sure that all of the toys conform to the same specifications to make sure all toy recipients feel equally loved. Normally I use safety eyes, so stitching them on was a bit different for me. I think they came out really cute though! It took me a while to get used to an amigurumi toy without arms, but it really grew on me, especially seeing the Bear with his two friends, the Lion and the Unicorn.

  • 1/5 skein of Paintbox Yarns Simply DK – a light weight (3) yarn (body color: Banana Cream)
  • 1/8 skein of Paintbox Yarns Simply DK – a light weight (3) yarn (mane colour: Light Caramel)
  • 1/50 skein of Paintbox Yarns Simply DK – a light weight (3) yarn (feet colour: Vanilla Cream)
  • 5g Loops and Threads Classic Fiber Fill
  • 3.00mm hook

Justine picked each animal with a meaning, and the Lion is supposed to represent bravery and courage, and I think that those qualities are so important, especially for children who have experienced what these refugees have. The detailing of the mane and the lion’s tail add joy and whimsy to this guy, and he was a lot of fun to work up.

  • 1/5 skein of Paintbox Yarns Simply DK – a light weight (3) yarn (body colour: Misty Grey; skirt and detail colours: Peach Orange)
  • 5g Loops and Threads Classic Fiber Fill
  • 3.00mm hook

I don’t normally work with colours as bright as this, but I felt like it was so fitting, especially for a little girl’s new unicorn toy. I’m not sure what I would tell my younger self if I had the chance, but I think Justine’s messages of individuality and creativity are excellent choices. I especially appreciated the details of this unicorn, from the hair ringlets to the skirt.

All in all, Justine did an amazing job creating three unique designs that are sure to be loved by everyone who receives one. They’re also super easy and quick to work up, so that anyone, even a beginning crocheter, can join in and help make these! I love the intention behind these, as I think it is so important to give back whenever possible. These refugee children have seen so much in their short lives, that to give them any opportunity to just be kids again is so valuable. If you crochet at all, I strongly urge you to get involved! If you don’t crochet, but live in the Edmonton and area and are interested in learning, please contact me! I would love to give you a quick tutorial so that you can also help out with this opportunity.

I can’t wait for more updates from Justine as she continues to promote this, and I especially can’t wait to see pictures of some of the happy children with their new toys!

Until next time, happy crafting!

  1. I love these little guys, dolls rather. It is hugely inspiring to see what you have made for little children! I notice you live in Edmonton. I’m once lived there & still cheer for the Oilers and Edmonton Eskimos. Perhaps I can crochet a doll or three to give to the refugee children? Perhaps I should be asking you where you give the dolls? Does the designer have a place to give these wonderful dolls? I am in Ravelry if you can help steer me in the right direction. My user name is treblemaker. Thank you for your time ♡

    1. Thank you so much for your interest! I’ll send you a message on Ravelry tonight with more information about this project! The organizer lives on Australia, but plans on taking the toys to refugee camps in Lebanon as soon as conditions allow!
