#74 – Mini Crab

Having just come back from the beach, I am filled with a new fondness for the beach and sea creatures! While I didn’t actually see any (live) crabs, I still wanted to make one, mostly because I feel like they are cuter in crochet form than they are in real life.

  • 1/50 skein of Paintbox Yarns Simply DK – a light weight (3) yarn (above: Vintage Pink)
  • 2g Loops and Threads Classic Fiber Fill
  • 2 safety eyes (7.5 mm)
  • Size E (3.5 mm) hook

Pattern by tick-tock hobbies

(abbreviations: SC = single crochet; INC = two single crochet in one stitch)

  1. Using the magic circle, crochet six SC. (6 stitches)
  2. INC in each stitch around the circle. (12 stitches)
  3. *SC in one stitch. INC in the next stitch*. Repeat from * to * five more times. (18 stitches)
  4. *SC two times. INC in the next stitch*. Repeat from * to * five more times. (24 stitches)
  5. *SC three times. INC in the next stitch*. Repeat from * to * five more times. Add eyes and cut yarn. (30 stitches)
  6. Repeat steps 1 to 5 again.
  7. Using slip stitches to join the two pieces, slip stitch around the circle. Stuff the shape as it closes, and then cut the yarn. (30 stitches)
  8. Hook under one of the ridged slipped stitch located to the side of the eye, and yarn over. Foundation single crochet three times, then cut the yarn and weave in the ends.
  9. Repeat step 8 on the other side of the eyes.

The other reason that I wanted to make a sea creature was to round off a set of amigurumi animals that I am planning to donate to a silent auction later this week! It’s for a Comedy Night Fundraiser, with all funds raised going toward the Alberta Aphasia Camp and the Augmentative and Alternative Communication Camp. I’m hoping that all three creations (Mini Octopus, Mini Starfish, Mini Crab) will find a happy new home this Thursday.

Until next time, happy crafting!
