Last month, I was part of a fundraising effort that was obtaining gift cards for Tim Horton’s to share with the less fortunate populations in Edmonton. The idea was that by allowing them to purchase a cup of coffee with dignity, they would also have a way to access warm shelter during times of bad weather. What made this fundraiser extra fun was the fact that my friend and I chose to match every $10 donated with a handmade item! In part of this making blitz, I managed to come up with this pattern using some yarn scraps for a cute headband / earwarmer!

• 1/20 skein of Bernat Softee Chunky – a super bulky weight (6) yarn (colour A: Linen)
• 1/50 skein of Lion Brand Yarn Wool-Ease Tonal – a bulky weight (5) yarn (colour B: Burnt Orange; colour C: Forest)
• Size K (6.5mm) hook

Pattern by tick-tock hobbies

(abbreviations: SC = single crochet)

1. Using colour A, foundation single crochet fifty stitches. Slip stitch to join to the first stitch in the row. (50 stitches)
2. Change to colour B and chain one before doing a SC in each stitch around the circle. Slip stitch to join to the first stitch in the row. (50 stitches)
3. Continue using colour B and chain one before doing a SC in each stitch around the circle. Slip stitch to join to the first stitch in the row. (50 stitches)
4. Change to colour A and chain one before doing a SC in each stitch around the circle. Slip stitch to join to the first stitch in the row. (50 stitches)
5. Change to colour C and chain one before doing a SC in each stitch around the circle. Slip stitch to join to the first stitch in the row. (50 stitches)
6. Continue using colour C and chain one before doing a SC in each stitch around the circle. Slip stitch to join to the first stitch in the row. (50 stitches)
7. Change to colour A and chain one before doing a SC in each stitch around the circle. Slip stitch to join to the first stitch in the row. (50 stitches)
8. continue using colour A and chain one before doing  a SC in the BACK LOOP of each stitch around the circle. Slip stitch to join to the first stitch in the row. Cut off all ends and weave in. (50 stitches)

I loved the way these colours worked together! It reminded me of Christmas without being too in-your-face about it, so hopefully it’d be a headband that you could see yourself wearing all year round. The possibilities of different colour combinations also opens up this pattern to a multitude of different looks! It was a perfect project to use up the scraps from some of the other projects in a way that was both functional and cute!

In terms of the fundraiser, we raised $465, and ended up surpassing our Maker goal with 4 scarves, 4 neckwarmers, 6 pairs of mittens, 16 toques, and 38 earwarmers! That’s 68 items! It was honestly such an honour to be a part of this project and to see how generous and supportive people can be. To be honest, we didn’t expect such a response when we started, or else we might have set a higher donation goal for each item, but through the support of our friends, family as well as new acquaintances, it all ended up working out!
