As you should all know by now, I am a huge fan of birthdays. When the boy I babysit regularly proudly told me that he was turning six this year, I told him that he could pick any animal he wanted, and I would make a present for him. Like any self-respecting boy who is a five-about-to-be-six-year old, he chose a shark.

• 1/50 skein of Premier Yarns Cotton Fair – a fine weight (2) yarn (above colour A: Slate Grey)
• 1/50 skein of Premier Yarns Cotton Fair – a fine weight (2) yarn (above colour B: Cream)
• 5g Loops and Threads Classic Fiber Fill
• 2 safety eyes (7.5mm)
• 2.00mm hook

Pattern by tick-tock hobbies

(abbreviations: SC = single crochet; INC = two single crochet into a single stitch; DEC = one single crochet over two stitches)

BODY

1. Chain five stitches in colour A. (5 stitches)
2. Starting in the second stitch from the hook, do a SC in the next three stitches. INC in the last stitch. Turn the chain so that you are working on the bottom side. SC in the next three stitches. INC in the last stitch. (10 stitches)
3. Chain one. *SC in the first stitch. INC in the next.* Repeat from * to * four more times.(15 stitches)
4. Chain one. *SC in each of the next two stitches. INC in the next.* Repeat from * to * four more times. (20 stitches)
5. Switch to colour B, chain one. SC in each of the next eight stitches. DEC over the next two stitches. DEC over the next two stitches. SC in each of the next eight stitches. (18 stitches)
6. Chain one. DEC over the next two stitches. Continue to DEC for the rest of the circle. Join to the first DEC with a slip stitch. (9 stitches)
7. If using safety eyes, add them here. Stuff firmly.
8. Chain one. *SC in the first stitch. DEC over the next two stitches.* Repeat from * to * two more times. (6 stitches)
9. Cut off the end and sew shut.

DORSAL FIN

1. Chain two stitches in colour A. (2 stitches)
2. Starting in the second stitch from the hook, do three SC in the stitch. (3 stitches)
3. Chain one and turn. INC in each stitch across the row. (6 stitches)
4. Fold in half and stitch closed.

TAIL FIN

1. If preferred, pick up a strand of colour A around a stitch of the body so that the tail is worked while already connected to the body. Otherwise, chain three stitches. (3 stitches)
2. Starting in the second stitch from the hook, do a SC in each stitch across the row. (2 stitches)

PECTORAL FINS

1. Pick up a strand of colour A around a stitch of the body so that the pectoral fins are worked while already connected to the body. Chain three stitches and slip stitch into the same stitch of the body that it was started in. (3 stitches)
2. Repeat for the other side.

I had a lot of doubts about the sharkiness of this little guy, as he doesn’t exactly look terrifying and awe-inspiring. I think that the large eyes make it difficult for him to look threatening and I may have made him a tad too chubby as well. Still, he grew on me, and now I have accepted that he is just a very friendly shark.
