When I was staying with my aunt and uncle in Hong Kong over the summer, I asked them if there were any animals they liked, and they chose their Chinese Zodiac animals! It may have taken me many months, but I am so excited to show you the monkey amigurumi I designed as part of a thank-you gift.

• 1/20 skein of Caron Simply Soft – a worsted weight (4) yarn (above colour A: Bone)
• 1/32  skein of Premier Yarns Cotton Fair – a fine weight (2) yarn (above colour B: Cream)
• 10g Loops and Threads Classic Fiber Fill
• Small square of patterned fabric
• 2 safety eyes (7.5 mm)
•  2.00 mm hook

Pattern by tick-tock hobbies

(abbreviations: SC = single crochet; INC = two single crochet into a single stitch; DEC = one single crochet over two stitches)

HEAD

1. Chain six stitches in colour A. (6 stitches)
2. Starting in the second stitch from the hook, SC in each of the next four stitches. INC in the last stitch. Turn the chain so that you are working on the bottom side. SC in the next four stitches. INC in the last stitch. (12 stitches)
3. INC in the first stitch. SC in the next four stitches. INC in each of the next two stitches. SC in the next four stitches. INC in the last stitch. (16 stitches)
4. INC in each of the next two stitches. SC in the next four stitches. INC in each of the next four stitches. SC in the next four stitches. INC in each of the next two stitches. (24 stitches)

10. Using colour A, SC in the first four stitches. Switch to colour B and SC in the next five stitches. Switch to colour A and SC in the next three stitches. Switch to colour B and SC in the next five stitches. Switch to colour A and SC in the next twenty-three stitches (40 stitches)
11. Using colour A, SC in the first four stitches. Switch to colour B and SC in the next six stitches. Switch to colour A and SC in the next two stitches. Switch to colour B and SC in the next six stitches. Switch to colour A and SC in the next twenty-two stitches. (40 stitches)
12. Using colour A, SC in the first five stitches. Switch to colour B and SC in the next thirteen stitches. Switch to colour A and SC in the next twenty-two stitches. (40 stitches)
13. Using colour A, *DEC over the next two stitches and SC in the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * again. Switch to colour B and SC in the next twelve stitches. Switch to colour A and SC in the next stitch. Repeat from * to * seven times. (31 stitches)
14. Using colour A, *SC in the first stitch and DEC over the next two stitches* and SC in the next stitch. Switch to colour B and repeat from * to * four times. Switch to colour A and repeat from * to * five times. If desired, add the safety eyes. (21 stitches)
15. Using colour A, *SC in the first stitch and DEC over the next two stitches* and SC in the next stitch. Switch to colour B and repeat from * to * twice, and then SC in the next stitch. Switch to colour A and repeat from * to * three times, and then SC in the last stitch. (15 stitches)
16. Using colour A, SC in each stitch around the circle. Stuff firmly. (15 stitches)
17. *SC in the first stitch. DEC over the next two stitches.* Repeat from * to * four more times. (10 stitches)
18. *DEC over the next two stitches.* Repeat from * to * four more times. (5 stitches)

EARS

1. Using the magic circle, start off with six SC in colour A. (6 stitches)
2. INC in each stitch around the circle. (12 stitches)
3. Using a long tail, fold the circle in half and sew the open end shut. If desired, cut out a small semi-circle of fabric to be sewn onto the ears.
4. Repeat rows 1 – 3 for the second ear.

BODY

1. Using the magic circle, start off with six SC in colour A. (6 stitches)
2. INC in each stitch around the circle. (12 stitches)
3. *INC in one stitch. SC in the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * five move times. (18 stitches)
4. *INC in one stitch. SC in the next two stitches.* Repeat from * to * five more times. (24 stitches)
5. SC in each stitch around the circle. (24 stitches)
6. Repeat row 5 eight more times.
7. *DEC over two stitches. SC in the next two stitches.* Repeat from * to * five more times. Stuff firmly. (18 stitches)
8. *DEC over two stitches. SC in the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * five more times. (12 stitches)
9. *DEC over two stitches.* Repeat from * to * five more times. (6 stitches)

ARMS

1. Using the magic circle, start off with four SC in colour B. (4 stitches)
2. *INC in the first stitch. SC in the next stitch*. Repeat from * to * again. (6 stitches)
3. Switch to colour A, and SC in each stitch around the circle. (6 stitches)
4. Repeat row 3 four more times.
5. Repeat rows 1 to 4 for the second arm.

LEGS

1. Using the magic circle, start off with six SC in colour A. (6 stitches)
2. INC in each stitch around the circle. (12 stitches)
3. SC in each stitch around the circle. (12 stitches)
4. Repeat row 3 one more time. Stuff firmly.
5. *DEC over two stitches. SC in the next two stitch.* Repeat from * to * two more times. (9 stitches)
6. *DEC over two stitches. SC in the stitch.* Repeat from * to * two more times. (6 stitches)
7. If desired, cut out a small circle of fabric to be sewn on to the legs.
8. Repeat rows 1 to 7 for the second leg.

TAIL

1. Using the magic circle, start off with four SC in colour A. (4 stitches)
2. SC in each stitch around the circle. (4 stitches)
3. Repeat row 2 seven times.

The more I explore this world of crochet, the more respect I have for people who design patterns regularly. There were so many mistakes made as I worked on this monkey, from the pattern of the face to the shape of the body. As always, I owe my friends a huge thank-you for putting up with a barrage of pictures asking for feedback. Their patient responses were invaluable as I worked to finish this monkey. I think even now, I see so many things that I could’ve improved on, but at the same time, I’m so happy to see what I was able to make.

The fabric covered ears and legs were inspired by the techniques used by All About Ami, just like in the elephant I’ve made using her posts! It was also done to match his friend, and I am so excited to show you guys next week! The friend isn’t an original design, but she’s still very cute. My aunt and uncle seem to like them, so hopefully you guys will too!
