#51 – Yarn Pom-Poms

This season, I’ve been noticing pom-poms popping up over the place! Initially, I was a bit hesitant about this trend since pom-poms feel very “little kid” to me, but I was won over in the end, mostly by how much fun pom-poms are to squish. It turns out that they’re incredibly easy to make as well!

  • 1/64 skein of Bernat Softee Chunky – a super bulky weight (6) yarn (above: Linen)
  • A large serving fork

All you need for a pom-pom is enough yarn to wrap around a fork twenty times or so, as well as a length of yarn roughly five inches long. The longer yarn wraps horizontally around the tines of the fork, and then the short piece of yarn wraps around the middle of the yarn bundle after you slide it off the fork. Make sure to knot the ends of the short piece well. After that, the only step is to snip the loops!

I would advise not tugging on the ends after the loops are cut, as it has the possibilities of pulling out the yarn from the pom-pom. Also, I would say that bulkier yarns would work better for this than a lighter weight yarn. This project is a great way to get rid of mini balls of yarn that tend to accumulate after each project.

If you try it out, please let me know! I would love to see pictures of your handmade pom-poms on your handmade items. Until next time, happy crafting!
