#50 – Waffle Stitch Beanie

Confession: my love for soft, neutral toned yarns will probably never go away. For that reason, if nothing else, my love for the Buttercream colourway of the Caron Cakes will likely continue for some time. Having made the Chevron Scarf last time, I wanted to try making a toque! (See, I’m a good Canadian — I say toque!) Confession: I also have a thing for stitches with texture, so when I saw this pattern used the waffle stitch, I knew I had to try it.

  • 1/2 skein of Caron Cakes – a medium weight (4) yarn (above: Buttercream)
  • Size I (5.50 mm) hook

I loved how this pattern turned out! The only thing I changed was that I added another row of decrease where I did a dc2tog across another round, finishing off with six stitches in the final row. I found that this helped to get a better closure on the top of the toque / beanie. While I didn’t have time to make a pompom, I think that would be the perfect touch for this as well. It’s still cute as-is, but it’s just missing a little something at the moment.

This pattern is a bit unique since it doesn’t actually work in the round while it create a circle shape. This means that it’s very important to close each row with a slip stitch! If you forget, you will get a bit of a gap since each row involves a turn. I would be curious to see if there would be a way to do the waffle stitch without turning, maybe by alternating with back-post double crochet instead of just front-post double crochets? I prefer working in the round since it looks a bit cleaner, at least in my opinion.

The slow colour change of the Caron Cake suited this pattern brilliantly, and since it only uses half the skein, there’s still lots of room for more fun projects! Until next time, happy crafting!
