Give-Away #2 – Whale

There are so many things to celebrate right now! There’s my seven month blog-versary, my brand new URL here, Canada Day, and last but not least, my birthday is coming up! This felt like the perfect time for a give-away, and I had a great time looking for a suitable pattern to follow.

  • 1/50 skein of Caron Simply Soft – a worsted weight (4) yarn (above colour A: Soft Blue)
  • 1/75 skein of Caron Simply Soft – a worsted weight (4) yarn (above colour B: Off White)
  • 5g Loops and Threads Classic Fiber Fill
  • 2 safety eyes (7.5 mm)
  • Size D (3.25 mm) hook

I wanted to make this whale cell-phone charm sized, so I decided to use a 3.25 mm hook. I didn’t change the yarn thickness though, but in hindsight, I kind of wish that I had because it’s just so much easier to crochet with a smaller needle when the yarn is finer as well. A lighter weight yarn would also help make the whale smaller! If I make another whale, I’ll definitely give it a try.

The design of the fins for this whale were so adorable! I don’t know if I attached them well enough, but I like the look of them, so I’ll just keep my fingers crossed that they’ll stay on. I think that finishing is still the hardest part of crochet for me. I actually had to crochet the white part of the whale twice because I tied off the end improperly and it unraveled a bit. The best way to learn is to practice though, and I have high hopes that someday I’ll be able to weave in ends and finish projects like a pro!

Another thing that I would like to practice in the future is the jogless colour change. I’d never heard of it before reading through this pattern, and I think it’ll be such a valuable technique to learn! At the moment, I’ve been camouflaging my colour changes with the limbs / noses / tails that get attached to the body, and it’s been working okay, but it would be nice to not have to worry about colour changes. That’s one of my favourite things about crochet and amigurumi – there are always so many new things to learn and so many new things to make.
