#23 – Dragon

Since another year of university has finished, I’ve been enjoying the extra time to finish up some projects I’ve been working on for much too long, including this super adorable dragon! This was actually the amigurumi pattern that made me determined to start crocheting again, so it’s really nice to finally finish it.

  • 1/2 skein of Patons Grace Yarn – a light weight (3) yarn (above colour A: Ginger)
  • 1/64 skein of Premier Yarns Cotton Fair – a fine weight (2) yarn (above colour B: Slate Gray)
  • 100g Loops and Threads Classic Fiber Fill
  • 2 safety eyes (7.5mm)
  • 2.0 mm hook

I didn’t have any felt handy, so I decided to crochet all of the extra “accessories” for this little guy. The body stripes were just stitched in with an embroidery needle before stuffing. At first, I considered making a separate piece to attach, but it made the dragon look like he was wearing a sweater, which was cute, but not the look I was going for.

The horns were made by crocheting four stitches in the magic circle and then crocheting one round. These were then attached to the head. For small pieces like this, I tend not to use fiberfill to stuff them – I actually use the ends of the yarn to stuff the horn. I prefer this method because the horns are so small to start with that they hardly need any stuffing.

I hesitated a lot about whether or not this dragon needed wings, but at the end of the day, I thought he was lacking something without them.20160508_065727.jpg

The wings were made following a pattern I found online for an amigurumi Toothless! To the best of my knowledge, the wings were courtesy of “Stitch Bitch”, but I haven’t been able to find the original creator online. If you wouldn’t mind helping me out, that would be great! I always want to give credit to the people who come up with such interesting and original patterns.

20160508_070235.jpgNow that this little guy has been all finished, he’s off to a good home with my brother! He’s part of a very belated birthday present, along with this lovely kraken cup from Salty Sea Dog Designs. They’re based out of Calgary, and make everything themselves! I fell in love with the detailing on this cup, and I think it’s just so whimsical that I would enjoy whatever drink that was served in it. I picked this bad boy up at the Make It! Fair in Edmonton a month ago, which I highly recommend going to if you live in the Edmonton or Vancouver areas. They’re a great way to connect with local makers and businesses, and I’ve never had any regrets about anything I’ve picked up from the fair.

At the end of the day, I love being able to give unique and handmade presents, and I think this is a big part of what drives me to crochet and try new patterns. It’s so rewarding to see someone’s face light up when they see something you’ve spent putting your love and time into. I really hope that I’ll be able to continue creating and making for many years to come.
