#31 – LEX Crop Top

I’m not very on top of the fashion game, but something I’ve noticed a lot in the last few summers is the emergence of crochet crop tops / bralettes / bikini tops, especially at music festivals! I’ve always wanted to try making one, but I’ve never found a pattern that I’ve fallen in love with – until I found this beautiful halter top! You do have to sign up for e-mails from Wool and The Gang in order to access the pattern, but I think it’s worth it.

  • 1/2 skein of Premier Yarns Cotton Fair – a fine weight (2) yarn (above colour: Baby Blue)
  • Size H (5.00 mm) hook

I didn’t use the Shiny Happy Cotton sold by Wool and The Gang, even though I’ve always wanted to try their yarn and their kits! It’s just a bit out of my price range at the moment, so it’ll stay a wishlist item for now.

I changed the picot edging, because the spacing of it didn’t seem quite right to me. I ended up doing single crochet stitches in each of the chain stitches, and I liked that better in terms of defining the little “cut-out” holes in the border.

I didn’t actually get the chance to make this next change, but if I ever make this pattern again, I’d love to try moving the strap at the base of the crop top up a few rows, so that it can cover a bra strap rather than having it around my waist. I think that would make it so much more convenient to wear, as a strapless bra could then hide under the crocheted strap. I know some people feel comfortable going bra-free, but I’m not quite ready for that yet, so I found it a bit awkward to have to try deal with the bra strap showing in the back. I’m not 100% sure if moving the strap would ruin the open look of the back, but if I ever try it, I’ll be sure to update you guys!

I honestly fell in love with this pattern the second I saw it, and now that I’ve completed it, I think I love it more! It fits so well and the cut of it is so flattering! Plus, it’s conservative enough that I feel comfortable wearing it anywhere, and not just to music festivals.

This crop top actually went to my friend Kathena, who runs the cutest fashion blog, and that you should definitely check out! I’m hoping to do a few more collaborations with some of my other friends, so please be patient – neat things are coming!
