#29 – Puzzle Ball

I’ve always liked toys that make you think a little bit, so when I saw this Amish Puzzle Ball, I was immediately enthralled! I couldn’t wait to try put it together, but first, I had to crochet the pieces!

  • 1/5 skein of Caron Simply Soft – a worsted weight (4) yarn (above colour A: Sunshine)
  • 1/10 skein of Lion’s Brand Heartland – a worsted weight (4) yarn (above colour B: Black Canyon)
  • 150g Loops and Threads Classic Fiber Fill
  • Size G (4.0 mm ) hook

I really liked how simple this pattern was, although I guess it was a bit repetitive, since you need twelve wedges and then three copies of the “lids”. I think if I were to make this pattern again, I would love to be more daring about my colour choices. It could be so interesting to have  different coloured wedges and lids to play around with while assembling this puzzle ball!

This pattern also pushed me to practice crocheting in the edges of my rows, which was a bit of a new experience. I think that choosing such a dark colour for the lids made this harder than it had to be, since I couldn’t really see the individual stitches at the end of each row. I think having this practice will be great in case I ever try to add edging to pieces, such as picot or other stitches.

Puzzle Ball 2

In terms of assembly, the puzzle was pretty straightforward, and didn’t take me too long to figure out at all. I think that’s part of what makes it such a great children’s toy though! It’s chubby and easy to grab, and will make younger kids and toddlers think a bit if the three pieces ever come apart. I can’t wait to give this puzzle ball to a young family I know with a two year old toddler and a six month baby! Hopefully the kids will enjoy playing with it as much as I enjoyed making it.

Side note, for those of you who have been reading my blog regularly, I am super excited to hint at new changes coming soon! I hope to be able to unveil them soon, so keep your fingers crossed! I can’t believe I’ve been posting for seven months already – it feels like no time has passed at all, but I’ve loved this experience of pushing myself to create something each week, and I think it’s so fun to be able to share them with you!
